Buck Lake Mercantile

A PIECE OF HISTORY

Buck Lake Mercantile

The Buck Lake Mercantile is a literal piece of Buck Lake history.

The building itself was built in 1955 and was run as a general store by Steve and Jean Hlavoy. During that time Buck Lake was a busy place due to the oil boom of 1953. Steve was often called away to deal with other business ventures that he was involved in. This left Jean to run the store independently. Both Jean and Steve worked hard to provide high quality goods and services to the community of Buck Lake. They would sell the store in 1973 after close to 18 years of running a very successful store.

At that time, the town was a bustling site, frequented by many local residents, workers and tradesmen, and travelers. Like in any small village, the store was one of the focal points of services in Buck Lake.

Throughout the years, the store has presented in different incarnations. Each new owner has brought to the store a piece of themselves; their creativity and their dreams. As time passed, the store has evolved and so too have it’s services. It has boasted a little dining space with delicious soups and sandwiches, a butcher shop that provided amazing cuts of fresh meats, a bakery with delicate turnovers and wholesome breads, and later a liquor store.

As the new store owners, we are excited to bring our creativity and vision to Buck Lake Mercantile. As we move forward, we are proud to continue the legacy of the Buck Lake Mercantile as yet another footnote in its long history of service to the community. We hope that as the services we provide grow that we never forget to honor those who came before us; those who established and maintained the store over the years.
